Overview

The Butler Chain of Lakes comprises a network of 13 interconnected lakes, intricately linked by up to 32 navigable canals, situated in Windermere, Florida. Lake Butler serves as the central hub, spanning 1,611 acres and functioning as one of the region's largest lakes.

Formation

These lakes formed through Florida's distinctive karst topography, where underground limestone deposits erode over time, resulting in the collapse of the soil above and the formation of deep water-filled cavities. Over centuries, these depressions fill with water, creating the present-day lakes alongside wildlife habitats.
