Ocala and Marion County have been shaping Florida's horse country since the mid-19th century, but the equestrian identity that defines the community today traces directly to 1943, when Carl G. Rose established Rosemere Farm and recognized that the region's limestone-rich soil and temperate climate were ideal for raising thoroughbreds. The nation took notice in 1956 when Needles, an Ocala-trained horse, won the Kentucky Derby — a victory repeated in 1978 when Triple Crown champion Affirmed emerged from local farms. The $1M–$5M farm segment has appreciated meaningfully since the World Equestrian Center opened, but it hasn't peaked yet.
