Red flags

Walk away if you see

  • A $10–$49 “service call” ad. It usually gets made up on the repair bill.
  • An 800/888 number with no local address, or an address that's a virtual office.
  • No license number for work that legally needs one (plumbing, electrical, A/C, roofing, pools, garage doors).
  • Pressure to replace when you asked about a repair, or to decide on the spot.
  • Asking for most of the money up front, or cash only.
  • No written estimate, or a price that changes after work starts.

Check any license in about 30 seconds at myfloridalicense.com.

What every contractor agrees to

  • A written estimate before any work starts — scope, materials and price.
  • No surprise fees. Any change to the price is agreed in writing before the extra work.
  • Finish the job you were hired for, and clean up after yourself.
  • Show up when you say you will, or call ahead if you can't.
  • Stand behind your work and come back to fix it if something isn't right.
