Auburndale — Lake Ariana

Auburndale's origins follow the South Florida Railroad's path through Polk County in the 1880s, when northern settlers arriving by train found the surrounding lakeland terrain promising for citrus cultivation. The town was incorporated in 1911 and named for Auburndale, Massachusetts, the former home of one of its early northern transplants. For its first five decades, Auburndale's identity was defined by the railroad depot, the citrus packing houses, and the chain of lakes that encircled the community — Lake Ariana, Lake Lena, Lake Juliana, Lake Van, and Lake Myrtle among them.

Lake Ariana, covering approximately 1,019 acres, emerged as the community's social and recreational center. Its depth, clarity, and size made it one of the premier water-ski lakes in Central Florida — a designation it has held across generations and that continues to define the lakefront real estate market today. The 1920s Florida Land Boom brought Auburndale a brief burst of ambition: hotels rose, downtown's brick commercial blocks date from this period, and the city briefly imagined itself as a major inland destination. The Boom's collapse and subsequent Depression years grounded those expectations, but the physical legacy — a well-built downtown core and the lakefront park infrastructure — has endured.

Lake Ariana Lakefront Park and Community Center received a significant modernization investment through the City of Auburndale and Catalyst Design Group, restoring and expanding the public water access that makes the lake a community asset rather than a purely private one. Today Auburndale sits at an inflection point: its location between Lakeland and Winter Haven on the I-4 corridor, combined with genuine lakefront assets and lower prices than its neighbors, has attracted new resident interest from remote workers and buyers priced out of Tampa Bay.
