Tortoise Island is a gated waterfront community on a man-made island in the Banana River in Satellite Beach, Brevard County, developed in the 1970s and 1980s by dredging and filling to create a network of navigable canals with direct Banana River access. The community occupies a barrier island position between the Atlantic Ocean beaches of Satellite Beach to the east and the Banana River Lagoon and Merritt Island to the west, giving it a genuinely island character despite being connected to the mainland by a single guarded causeway.
Development was driven by aerospace employment at Patrick Air Force Base, KSC, and the growing defense contractor presence in Brevard County's 'Space Coast' economy.
