Spruce Creek Airport traces its origins to World War II, when the U.S. Navy constructed an outlying field (OLF) adjacent to NAS Daytona Beach and NAS DeLand — the site originally featured four 4,000-foot paved runways used for training flights. After the Navy abandoned the property in 1946, the land sat largely dormant until 1969, when aviation enthusiast McKinley Conway and five business partners acquired it as a real estate investment. Conway's vision was a residential aviation community — a neighborhood where homeowners could taxi their aircraft from private hangars directly to a shared runway. The initial site plan was approved in July 1970, making Spruce Creek one of the first planned residential airparks in the United States.

The Spruce Creek Airport (FAA identifier 7FL6) was formally established in 1974. Development proceeded through the 1970s and 1980s, attracting aviators who recognized the unique proposition: a 4,002-foot asphalt runway, ILS instrument approach, 100LL avgas, on-site maintenance, and the ability to keep an aircraft in your own hangar at home. Today the community spans approximately 1,350 acres with over 1,598 properties and a population of roughly 5,000 residents — making it widely recognized as the largest residential airpark in the world.
