Background

A brief history

Errol Estate began as Errol Ranch, part of the Apopka-area landholdings of Chicago merchant John Thomas Pirie (of Carson Pirie Scott). Pirie was born in Errol, Scotland, in 1827, and the community takes its name from his Scottish birthplace — not, as a persistent local legend claims, from the actor Errol Flynn. Pirie was reportedly drawn to the area's rolling terrain and lakes, which recalled the countryside near his hometown.

The land was developed into a residential golf community in the early 1970s, anchored by what is today the Errol Country Club (Apopka Golf & Tennis Club). Its 27-hole course — the Lake, Grove, and Highland nines — was designed by noted golf architect Joe Lee. Homes were built across multiple phases through the 1970s and 1980s in a range of architectural styles, with later sub-communities such as Parkside at Errol Estates and Errol Club Villas added over time.

Errol Estate today carries the distinctive character of a long-established Florida golf community — mature tree canopy, generous lots, varied architecture across build eras, and a social life centered on the country club that has persisted through multiple ownership changes and market cycles.

The feel

What it's like to live here

Errol Estate has the relaxed, slightly eccentric energy of a community that has been around long enough to stop trying to impress anyone. The architecture is genuinely varied — mid-century ranch homes sit alongside 1980s two-story Florida contemporaries and more recent infill builds, creating a visual diversity that newer master-planned communities cannot manufacture. Lot sizes are generous by modern standards, and the tree canopy — established over 50 years — is exceptional.

The demographic is older on average than most Apopka communities, reflecting the original buyer base that has aged in place, supplemented by move-in buyers attracted by the value and the golf access. The country club functions as the community's social hub; golf is taken seriously here, and the club's events calendar drives resident interaction. The overall feel is comfortable, unpretentious, and self-contained — Errol Estate residents tend to like that the community has its own identity separate from the surrounding Apopka area.

The details

What to expect

Home Age & Condition Range

Errol Estate homes span build years from the early 1970s through the 1990s and occasional later infill. This wide age range means condition and update status vary enormously — a thorough inspection and realistic assessment of major system ages (roof, HVAC, electrical, plumbing) is essential.

Golf Club Membership

The Errol Country Club is the community's centerpiece. Membership is separate from HOA fees and optional, but the club's social life and golf access are core to what makes Errol Estate distinctive. Prospective buyers should tour the club and understand current membership structure and condition.

Lot Sizes

Lots at Errol Estate are notably generous by contemporary Orange County standards, with many quarter-acre to half-acre parcels that would not be platted this way in today's development climate. Golf-frontage lots are the most valuable and most consistently maintained.

Historical Character

Errol Estate takes its name from Errol, Scotland — the birthplace of founder John T. Pirie, whose Errol Ranch once covered this land. A popular local legend instead ties the name to actor Errol Flynn, but the documented history points to Pirie, not Flynn. Either way, the community retains a genuine sense of character from its era, which many buyers find appealing.

Value Trajectory

Errol Estate values have been on a sustained upward path as Apopka's overall desirability has increased and as buyers seeking established communities with large lots have run out of comparable alternatives in the metro area. The value gap versus newer golf communities continues to compress.

Market Commentary

What the market is doing

Errol Estate is one of Apopka's genuine value propositions. At $300K–$700K, buyers are getting established golf community infrastructure, large lots, and a distinctive history at prices well below what comparable golf-frontage lifestyle commands in most of metro Orlando. Homes vary widely in update status — that's where the pricing spread comes from. A fully updated golf-frontage home at $600K here would cost $900K+ in Isleworth-adjacent communities. The key question for every buyer: what's the roof, HVAC, and kitchen status?
