Top Employers & Major Companies in Brevard County, Florida (2026)
From NASA and SpaceX to L3Harris and Health First — a complete look at Brevard County's major employers, where they're located, and what the housing market looks like near each one.
If you're relocating to Brevard County for work — or you're an employer looking to understand where your workforce lives — this is the guide you actually need.
The Space Coast isn't just a nickname. Brevard County has one of the most concentrated clusters of aerospace, defense, and technology employment anywhere in the country, anchored by Kennedy Space Center on the north end and L3Harris Technologies in Melbourne to the south. What that means practically: a highly educated workforce, above-average household incomes, and a real estate market that has proven resilient through economic cycles that hit other Florida markets harder.
I'm Ryan Solberg with MaxLife Realty. I work with a lot of buyers relocating to the Space Coast for aerospace careers, and the same question comes up every time: who actually works here, where are they located, and where do their employees tend to live? Here's the honest breakdown.
Kennedy Space Center & NASA
Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island is the physical anchor of Brevard County's aerospace identity. NASA's human spaceflight operations, including the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and the Vehicle Assembly Building — still one of the largest buildings by volume in the world — sit on the north end of the county.
NASA itself employs approximately 2,500 civil servants at KSC, but the contractor workforce is several times larger. The companies that operate under NASA contracts at KSC include Boeing, Jacobs Engineering, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and dozens of smaller specialized contractors. When you add it all up, KSC directly and indirectly supports tens of thousands of jobs in Brevard County.
Where KSC employees live: Merritt Island is the default — it's literally on the island adjacent to the space center, with SR-405 providing direct access. Titusville, directly across the Indian River from KSC, is the most affordable option and has the best rocket launch views in the county. Rockledge and Viera are common for employees who want better school systems and don't mind a 20–30 minute drive.
SpaceX
SpaceX has made Kennedy Space Center one of its primary launch facilities. The company leases Launch Complex 39A — the same pad that launched the Apollo moon missions and Space Shuttle — and has built substantial infrastructure at KSC for its Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship programs.
SpaceX's Brevard presence has grown significantly since its first KSC launch in 2017. The company employs engineers, technicians, launch controllers, and support personnel, with headcount fluctuating based on manifest density. Launch cadence out of KSC has accelerated dramatically in recent years — which means more local employment and, for Brevard residents, more opportunities to step outside and watch rockets rise off the horizon.
SpaceX employees at KSC tend to work irregular hours tied to launch windows, which makes Merritt Island and Titusville the most practical residential choices.
L3Harris Technologies — Melbourne HQ
L3Harris Technologies is Brevard County's most significant private-sector employer and the company most closely associated with Melbourne's economic identity. Harris Corporation was founded in Melbourne in 1895 — originally a printing equipment company that pivoted to radio communications — and the merged L3Harris entity has maintained Melbourne as its global headquarters.
With approximately $20 billion in annual revenue and roughly 50,000 employees worldwide, L3Harris is one of the top 10 U.S. defense contractors. Brevard County is home to the company's headquarters operations and several of its major business units focused on communication systems, electronic warfare, and space and airborne systems.
What L3Harris actually makes: Military radios and secure communication systems used by virtually every branch of the U.S. armed forces. Airborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance sensors. Space payloads and ground systems. Electronic warfare systems for aircraft. If you've seen photos of a U.S. soldier with a radio, or read about an intelligence aircraft's sensor suite, there's a good chance L3Harris technology is involved.
Where L3Harris employees live: The Melbourne campus is in southwest Melbourne near US-192. Viera and Suntree are the dominant residential choices for L3Harris professionals — both are convenient to Melbourne by Melbourne-area roads, offer newer construction and A-rated schools, and have the lifestyle infrastructure (restaurants, shops, recreational facilities) that professional households expect. Rockledge is popular for employees who prefer older neighborhoods with more character and mature tree canopy.
Patrick Space Force Base
Patrick Space Force Base sits at the south end of Cocoa Beach, adjacent to Cape Canaveral. Originally established during World War II, Patrick is now home to the 45th Space Wing (now reorganized under Space Force), which manages Eastern Range launch operations — the airspace and sea corridor over which all KSC launches fly.
Military employment at Patrick directly supports a significant housing market in Cocoa Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, and the surrounding communities. BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) for Patrick-based personnel in 2026 is substantial enough to support homeownership rather than renting in most of the county, which means military buyers are a consistent and active segment of the Brevard real estate market.
The combination of military assignment and the launch mission means Patrick personnel are often deeply embedded in the Space Coast community — many choose to stay after separation or retirement, becoming permanent Brevard residents.
Where Patrick personnel live: Cocoa Beach is the obvious choice for proximity. Indian Harbour Beach, Satellite Beach, and Indialantic — the barrier island communities south of Cocoa Beach — are popular for officers and senior NCOs who want slightly larger homes. Viera is common for families prioritizing school quality over commute length.
Boeing
Boeing has substantial operations at Kennedy Space Center related to its Space Launch System (SLS) — NASA's heavy-lift rocket for the Artemis moon program — and the CST-100 Starliner crew capsule. Boeing's KSC workforce is involved in manufacturing, testing, and launch operations for these programs.
Boeing's Florida presence is specifically tied to the government launch market rather than commercial aviation. The workforce skews heavily toward engineers, systems integrators, and highly experienced technicians who have often been working in the space industry for decades.
Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman maintains operations at Kennedy Space Center related to launch vehicle components and space systems. The company has been involved in multiple NASA programs over decades and continues to support current exploration initiatives.
Northrop employees at KSC follow the same residential patterns as other KSC contractors — Merritt Island for proximity, Viera and Rockledge for lifestyle and schools.
Lockheed Martin
Lockheed Martin's Brevard presence is centered on space systems and launch vehicle operations at KSC. The company's Space division supports multiple government programs and is a partner in United Launch Alliance, which also operates out of Cape Canaveral.
Embraer
Embraer, the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, has established Melbourne as the home of its North American operations including engineering, customer service, and aircraft completion work. Embraer Executive Jets and the company's commercial services arm both have significant Melbourne presence.
Embraer's Melbourne operation has made the company a notable employer of aerospace engineers and aviation technicians — and has brought a Brazilian professional community to Brevard County that has influenced local culture and real estate demand in interesting ways.
Health First
Not every Brevard employer is aerospace. Health First is the dominant healthcare system in the county, operating four hospitals — Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Viera Hospital, and Palm Bay Hospital — plus hundreds of outpatient, primary care, and specialty locations across the county.
Health First is the largest non-government employer in Brevard County by headcount. For physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals relocating to the Space Coast, Health First is often the reason they're here. The healthcare workforce tends to distribute across the county depending on which hospital or clinic they're assigned to, but Viera and Melbourne are common choices given the location of the main campus and the system headquarters.
Brevard Public Schools
Brevard Public Schools is the single largest employer in the county by raw headcount — approximately 9,000 employees serving roughly 72,000 students across 83 schools. For educators relocating to Brevard, the district has a strong reputation relative to comparable Florida districts and consistently outperforms many peer systems on academic metrics.
Teacher salaries in Brevard have improved meaningfully in recent years, making the district more competitive for professional educators who might otherwise gravitate toward higher-cost markets.
The Broader Contractor Ecosystem
Beyond the anchor employers, Brevard County has an extensive ecosystem of smaller defense and aerospace contractors, engineering services firms, and technology companies that support the larger programs. Companies like Dynetics, Amentum, Peraton, SAIC, Leidos, and dozens of others have Brevard operations ranging from a handful of employees to several hundred.
This contractor ecosystem creates a labor market where professional mobility is high — engineers and program managers often move between companies without moving houses. It also means the unemployment rate in Brevard consistently runs below the national average and below the Florida state average, because the government defense and space market provides a base of demand that private-sector cycles don't easily displace.
What This Means for Real Estate
The employment profile of Brevard County shapes its real estate market in specific ways that matter if you're buying here.
Household incomes are higher than median home prices suggest. The ratio of income to home price in Brevard is genuinely favorable compared to other Florida markets. An aerospace engineer at L3Harris or a program manager at Lockheed earning $120,000–$180,000 is buying in a market where the median home price is $350,000–$450,000. That's a very different dynamic than Orlando or Miami.
Dual-income aerospace households are common. Couples where both partners work in aerospace or defense create household incomes that make Brevard's real estate look exceptionally affordable. These buyers are often qualified for more than they expect.
Military BAH supports homeownership. Patrick SFB BAH rates in 2026 are high enough that buying makes more financial sense than renting for many service members — and military buyers typically move quickly and transact cleanly.
The market is insulated from cyclical swings. When interest rates rise or consumer confidence drops, defense and aerospace spending doesn't stop. The Brevard market has historically weathered broader downturns better than markets dependent on tourism or financial services.
